Impaired Critical Thinking

Cognitive dissonance is the phenomenon that occurs when the brain is confronted with conflicting information. It is experienced as distress at a cognitive level, as it is supposed to. It provides an adaptive advantage by creating an environment for the brain that pushes one to look for evidence of the right answer. This is one of the underlying mechanisms by which science works. It is directly linked to critical thinking. Acceptance of many of the concepts of Christianity means you must learn to ignore cognitive dissonance and avoid using your critical thinking. This is much easier if you can train the brain to ignore and avoid when still young. During development, the brain is particularly responsive to incoming stimuli. Religions take advantage of this period. Christians in particular like to quote a relevant Biblical passage that encourages believers to emulate the period of life when critical thinking is poor and ideas carry far more impact: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven Mat 18:3.”  Indoctrination essentially sets up the biological framework which will color all experience going forward and affect how information is evaluated. Being trained to work around the cognitive processes that might cause questioning of the faith is a primary part of indoctrination with Christianity.
